Plan my tripDestination overview
Kashmir is best known for Srinagar’s houseboats and shikara rides on Dal Lake, but the higher country is where it gets really good. Above Sonamarg, a chain of glacial lakes sits between 3,500 and 4,000 metres, and the Kashmir Great Lakes trek links them in a week.
Our Kashmir Great Lakes trek starts from Srinagar, begins walking near Sonamarg at Shitkadi, and ends at Naranag. On the way it passes Vishansar, Kishansar, Gadsar, Satsar and the twin lakes of Gangabal and Nundkol. The meadows are in full flower in July and August. The two passes, Gadsar and Zaj, are the hardest days.
If you would rather see the valley without trekking, we can plan a private trip around Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg. Share your dates in the form and a travel expert will suggest a route.
Places you'll love
Srinagar
Shikara rides, floating markets early in the morning and houseboat stays.
Great Lakes trek
Twin lakes below the Kishansar peak, usually reached on day three.
Great Lakes trek
The highest point of the trek, with a view down to several lakes on the far side.
Great Lakes trek
Two large lakes beneath Mount Harmukh, the last big campsite before Naranag.
Baramulla
Meadows in summer, skiing in winter, and the Gulmarg Gondola up to Apharwat.
Why go
Vishansar, Kishansar, Gadsar, Satsar, Gangabal and Nundkol are glacial lakes, each one bluer than the last.
In July and August the high meadows fill with flowers, and shepherds graze their flocks along the trail.
Start or finish with a houseboat night and a shikara ride on Dal Lake.
On the road
Routes as planned in our itineraries' day-by-day plans.
Plan your dates
The Great Lakes trek runs from July to mid-September, when the passes are clear and the meadows are in flower. For the valley, April and May bring tulips and spring blossom. October brings chinar trees turning red. December to February is the time for snow and skiing at Gulmarg.
Getting there
Fly into Srinagar, which has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai and other cities. For the Great Lakes trek, the drive from Srinagar to the trailhead near Sonamarg takes about three hours. The trek ends at Naranag, about two hours from Srinagar.

My trip to Kashmir was amazing. The beautiful views and calm lakes were unforgettable. We loved the comfortable stays provided by Safar, and the food was very good. The Shikara ride on Dal Lake and enjoying every moment in the snow were the best parts. Our trip coordinator, Hritik, was very helpful. From the initial time of booking till the last day of the trip he was very helpful and suggested us a lot as well. He knew a lot about the area, suggested great places to eat, and quickly helped us whenever needed. He is very patient and humble. Thanks to Hritik, we had a comfortable and memorable trip. I would say it was worthwhile.
I recently planned a trip with the help of safar wanderlust , and piyush was our cordinator I couldn’t have asked for a better cordinator From the very beginning, he was organized, proactive, and incredibly responsive. He understood exactly what I was looking for and tailored the itinerary to match my preferences perfectly. What stood out the most was his attention to detail—every hotel, activity, and transfer was well-planned and hassle-free. He checked in regularly to make sure everything was going smoothly and was always available if I had questions or needed changes. His suggestions for local experiences and hidden gems added so much value to the trip. Overall, Piyush made the entire travel experience seamless and truly enjoyable. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a reliable, friendly, and knowledgeable trip coordinator!
We had been planning this trip for almost six months, and choosing the right package made it truly worthwhile. It was an awesome experience overall. The food and accommodation were very good.😊 We especially enjoyed the bonfire🔥 and DJ, and we even celebrated our friend’s birthday, 🎂 which made the trip extra special. Our guide, Ram, was very understanding and supportive throughout.🤩

"It was my first ever trip ✨ — I was scared at times 😅 but the adventure made it all worth it! The fun we had, the dance 💃, the Garba 🪔 — unforgettable! I made so many beautiful memories 🫶📸 with you all. My first trip couldn’t have been more amazing! 🌄❤️"
I truly enjoyed the trip—it was my first time travelling with a group of people outside my usual circle, and honestly, I never imagined they would feel so much like family. The entire journey was so well managed, and every moment was filled with fun, laughter, and new connections. A big shoutout to the coordinator for doing such a fantastic job in organizing everything so smoothly. Grateful for the experience!😊😊
🌟 A Journey of a Lifetime – Thanks to Safar Wanderlust! 🌟 If you're reading this and wondering whether to book your trip with Safar Wanderlust, stop thinking and just go for it. Speaking from the bottom of our hearts — this trip wasn’t just a getaway, it was an experience of a lifetime, and we owe it all to the amazing team behind Safar Wanderlust. This was our first trip ever away from home, and the nervous excitement we had at the start quickly turned into pure joy, thanks to how wonderfully everything was handled.
Tried a travel package for the first time in my life — and I’m genuinely impressed! I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the entire experience turned out to be far better than I had imagined. Every little detail was taken care of beautifully. The accommodations were clean, comfortable, and well-located. The service at each place was warm and welcoming, which made me feel at home throughout the trip. But what truly stood out was the food — it was absolutely fantastic! From local delicacies to well-prepared meals at the stay, every bite was a delight. looking forward for more trips like this from safarwanderlust.😄
I am delighted that I chose Safar Wanderlust for my first trip to Himachal. I didn't even realize it had passed after these five days because everything had gone so smoothly and nicely. Our trip was unforgettable thanks to our wonderful tour guide, Ram Thakur sir. To us, he was more like a buddy than a tour guide. I had a terrific encounter with him! You have given me the greatest memories of my life and made every penny worth it ✨️.

Before you go
Prepaid SIMs from outside Jammu & Kashmir generally do not work. Use a postpaid connection.
Checkposts on the Great Lakes trail need original photo ID.
Kashmir is conservative. Covering shoulders and knees is respectful, especially at shrines.
Good to know
It is a moderate to difficult trek of around 70 km over seven days, with two passes above 4,000 m. Most days mean six to eight hours of walking. You should be able to jog 5 km in about 35 minutes before you go. It is not a good choice for a very first trek.
Yes. The trail passes army checkposts near Gadsar and Satsar, where every trekker must show an original government photo ID. Carry the original along with photocopies.
Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg and the Great Lakes trail see large numbers of tourists every season. As with any border region, it is worth checking current local advisories before you travel.
A shikara ride and a night on a Dal Lake houseboat, the Mughal gardens at Nishat and Shalimar, the Gulmarg gondola, and the Betaab and Aru valleys near Pahalgam. The Tulip Garden in Srinagar opens for a few weeks around April.
