Destination overview
About Jaisalmer
Jaisalmer rises out of the Thar Desert in yellow sandstone, which is why it is called the Golden City. Its fort is one of the few in the world where people still live. Inside the walls there are houses, temples, guesthouses and small shops.
Our Jaisalmer trip covers the city and the desert beyond it. You spend an evening on the Sam sand dunes with a camel or jeep ride and a night at a desert camp, then drive out to the Longewala War Memorial, the site of the 1971 tank battle. The last day is a walk through the fort, Patwon ki Haveli and Gadisar Lake before heading home.
It is a short trip that works well over a long weekend in winter, when desert days are warm and nights are cold enough for a campfire.

He understood exactly what I was looking for and tailored the itinerary to match my preferences perfectly. What stood out the most was his attention to detail—every hotel, activity, and transfer was well-planned and hassle-free. He checked in regularly to make sure everything was going smoothly and was always available if I had questions or needed changes. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Longewala War Memorial?
Longewala, about 120 km from Jaisalmer, is where a small Indian Army post held off a Pakistani tank column in December 1971. The memorial has captured tanks, a small museum and a short film. The battle inspired the film Border.
Is a desert camp stay at Sam comfortable?
Camps at Sam range from basic to fairly comfortable, usually tents with attached bathrooms, dinner and a folk music and dance evening. Desert nights in winter get very cold, so carry warm clothes even though the days are sunny.
Can you stay inside Jaisalmer Fort?
Yes, there are guesthouses inside the fort. The fort is a living monument, though, and heavy use has strained its drainage and foundations, so staying outside it is often considered more responsible.
Should I choose a camel ride or a jeep safari at the dunes?
A camel ride is slower and quieter and fits a sunset. A jeep safari is quick, bumpy and fun for groups. Many people do a short camel ride at sunset and skip the jeep.
