Maharashtra covers a lot of ground. It has Sahyadri hill stations like Mahabaleshwar, Matheran and Lonavala, and Konkan beaches like Alibaug. It also has some of India’s most important pilgrim circuits and the Ellora caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Maharashtra has Bhimashankar near Pune, Trimbakeshwar near Nashik and Grishneshwar near the Ellora caves. Many lists also count Aundha Nagnath and Parli Vaijnath in the Marathwada region. A Three Jyotirlinga circuit from Pune usually covers Bhimashankar, Trimbakeshwar and Grishneshwar in four days, often with Shirdi.
It is a pilgrimage to eight Ganesha temples around Pune: Morgaon, Siddhatek, Pali, Mahad, Theur, Lenyadri, Ozar and Ranjangaon. Traditionally it starts and ends at Morgaon, and it can be done in two to three days.
No. Matheran is Asia’s only automobile-free hill station. Vehicles stop at Dasturi, and from there you walk, ride a horse, take a hand-pulled rickshaw or catch the toy train.
Lonavala, Matheran and Mahabaleshwar are at their greenest from July to September, with waterfalls everywhere and cloud rolling over the Sahyadris. Expect heavy rain, slippery paths and big weekend crowds from Mumbai and Pune.
